Holiday-Party Countdown to Confidence

4 – 6 weeks in advance:

Add next-generation Vitamin A and skin conditioning to your REDEFINE or REVERSE Brightening Regimen. The AMP MD System combines dermatology-inspired micro-exfoliation with the clinical strength REDEFINE Intensive Renewing Serum to reveal refined, smoother, firmer-looking skin.

Using the REVERSE Lightening*, UNBLEMISH or SOOTHE Regimen? You can still have the benefits of revitalized, younger-looking skin by incorporating Intensive Renewing Serum sans the Roller.

TIP: This is also the time to place additional focus on taking care of yourself from the inside out. Consider increasing your water intake and taking a supplement designed to promote healthy skin.

2 – 4 weeks in advance:

Start working towards party-ready eyes by selecting the eye cream that’s best for you. To reduce the look of dark circles and puffiness, use new Active Hydration Bright Eye Complex morning and night. To minimize the appearance of expression lines and wrinkles, add REDEFINE Multi-Function Eye Cream to your nighttime Regimen.

TIP: Prep for some glamour by applying Lash Boost each night. The conditioning serum features a proprietary formula that improves the appearance of lash volume and length.

2 – 3 weeks in advance:

Plan to give lips a fuller-looking pout. After completing your Regimen at night, use REDEFINE Lip Renewing Serum to maintain fuller, younger-looking lips and help retain their natural moisture.

TIP: Your skin will benefit from extra hydrating, too. Now is a great time to incorporate Active Hydration Serum into your Regimen.

Day of the event:

Get a sun-kissed glow without the sun. ESSENTIALS Foaming Sunless Tan begins to develop color in 2-4 hours. (Don’t get dressed until it’s fully dry!) For sheer sun protection, finish with ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides Broad Spectrum SPF 20. Its light-deflecting minerals help reduce visible redness while evening-out the look of skin tone.

Now, get ready to reveal the confident new you, and have some merry holiday fun!

What If There Were Only Happily Ever Afters?

ageless

Life changes. And skin changes.

But WHAT IF you could control you skin’s destiny?  You can.  You control 80% of your skin’s future (only 20% is genetic).  And that’s great news! The choices you make today will affect the way you look and feel tomorrow, next year and well into the future.

WHAT IF you could always be a few steps ahead, anticipating your skin’s biological needs?  You can.  With the right care, your skin can visibly improve with age so you can look even better tomorrow than you do today.

WHAT IF you had two world-renowned doctors, a bio-scientist, a private consultant (everyone should) and an entire regimen devoted to your skin’s every whim 24/7?

You do.  With 30 years of combined research and experience, Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields developed their philosophy of Multi-Med® Therapy. This regimen-based approach treats specific skin concerns by combining the most effective ingredients within an optimized formulation, applied in the right order. Stick to the Regimen that’s right for your skin and you, too, can experience trans-formative results.

WHAT IF you felt good about your neck?

A steady diet of intelligent skincare is the foundation of skin that looks young and healthy. The Rodan and Fields REDEFINE Regimen is a comprehensive skincare solution that layers cosmetic ingredients and potent peptide technology. This formula helps to defend against and reduce the visible signs of aging for noticeably firmer, smoother, flawless-looking skin.

WHAT IF having flawless skin wasn’t an accident?

REVERSE Regimen is an effective, full-face solution that tackles dullness and uneven skin tone. REVERSE provides a long-term solution for a radiant, more even complexion. It exfoliates dulling dead skin, helps even and brighten discolored skin, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and protects against further UV damage.

WHAT IF you could break the vicious acne cycle?

UNBLEMISH Regimen was created as a continuous solution that addresses the acne cycle—clogged pores, trapped oil, bacterial attacks and inflammation. This daily, full-face system combines cosmetic and active over-the-counter ingredients that unclog pores to eliminate most acne blemishes before they are visible on the skin’s surface.

WHAT IF your skin wasn’t so sensitive?

SOOTHE Regimen combines clinically tested active over-the-counter ingredients with our exclusive, patent-pending RFp3 peptide technology to shield against the environmental aggressors associated with dry, chapped, sensitive skin. So effective, the SOOTHE Regimen can decrease visible redness, peeling and dryness. The result? A healthy-looking, even-toned complexion every day.

SECRETS TO LOOKING YOUNGER

We all want to look our best.  I want to share my personal anti-aging tips.  It’s easy to start these habits which will actually help you achieve a more youthful look. Take a peek and see if there are any skincare and lifestyle changes you might put to use on your journey to Decide Today How Tomorrow Looks™.

never too early

1: I do my best to limit sugar and carbs.  I must confess, this is the hardest for me.  I have learned that refined sugar and alcohol consumption can age skin. I strive to reduce my daily intake for younger-looking skin—also hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.  Healthy eating can make a big difference in how you feel and how you look. Eating and drinking starchy, sugary, or simple carbs—like potatoes, rice, chips, or crackers—can cause glycation, a form of damage to your skin’s collagen.  I do my best to eat a well-balanced diet with an emphasis on fresh fruits and veggies, and I drink plenty of water, every day.

2: I have become a faithful back sleeper since I learned that face planting will create a wrinkle.  I had to work at this to develop the habit.  When you sleep on your back, you avoid creating a crease that can become a permanent wrinkle.

3: It’s all about being consistent.  I keep my skin clean and moisturized.  I seldom wear makeup other than eyeliner, mascara and lipstick.  People tell me my skin looks fabulous and I love the compliments that I get!  What you do every day will have a greater benefit for your skin’s appearance than almost any procedure you could do in a doctor’s office on an occasional basis.

4: I wash my face every night before bed.  First, I remove eye make-up with REDEFINE Eye Cloths.  I have my routine to clean, tone and moisturize.  I alternate products between the REDEFINE and REVERSE.  My top skincare concern changes with the seasons, so I use the specific product for my current concern.  I know my skin will stay looking clear and young with faithful use of the products that are right for your skin concern.  Nightly cleansing is important for everyone because pollution has been shown to cause free radical formation and premature aging.

5: I always, always, always use sun screen.  I never go outside without protection.  I love that my products have dual protection of broad spectrum sunscreen and moisturizer.  Since I live at the beach, I get exposed to a lot of rays.  I use hats and UV protective clothing.  I protect my hands while driving with REDEFINE Age Shield Hand Balm.  I love the simple applicator and I keep it in my purse.  Another way to protect my complexion is with Mineral Peptides powder with SPF 20.  I load my brush with powder for a quick dusting later in the day.  The peptides protect against environmental pollution as well as sun.

6:  I keep my stress levels down.  I meditate and do water aerobics.  Keeping and maintaining positive thoughts impacts every aspect of my life…no matter what the present reality is.  Not stressing is key. When our bodies respond to stress, blood, nutrients and oxygen are directed to vital areas such as our legs and away from the organs such as skin, creating dark under-eye circles and an ashen or sallow appearance.

Are you a wrinkle warrior? Here are my top tips.

Did you know that 80% of your skin’s appearance is up to you?  Only 20% is genetics!  Read what experts say you can do to make a difference and be a wrinkle warrior.gene

  1. Avoid the sun. It’s the No. 1 cause of wrinkles, with dozens of studies documenting the impact. In one study that looked at identical twins, New York plastic surgeon Darrick Antell, MD, found sun exposure was even more important than heredity. Siblings who limited sun time had fewer wrinkles and looked younger overall than their sun-worshiping twins.

2. Wear sunscreen. If you must go out in the sun, the American Academy of Dermatology says, wear sunscreen! It will protect you from skin cancer, and help prevent wrinkles at SCFthe same time.  Buyer beware, not all sunscreens are effective.

The Skin Cancer Foundation grants its Seal of Recommendation to products that meet the Foundation’s specific criteria for effective UV sun protection.

  1. Don’t smoke. More studies are confirming that cigarette smoke ages skin — mostly by releasing an enzyme that breaks down collagen and elastin, important components of the skin. Sibling studies done at the Twin Research Unit at St. Thomas Hospital in London found the brother or sister who smoked tended to have skin that was more wrinkled and up to 40% thinner than the non-smoker.
  2. Get adequate sleep. Yale dermatologist Nicholas Perricone, MD, says that when you don’t get enough sleep, the body produces excess cortisol, a hormone that breaks down skin cells. Get enough rest, Perricone says, and you’ll produce more HGH (human growth hormone), which helps skin remain thick, more “elastic,” and less likely to wrinkle.
  3. Sleep on your back. Dr. Katie Rodan says, “sleeping on your back could be better than botox”.  It is a simple, no cost way to avoid creating wrinkles.  The AAD (American Academy of Dermatologists) says any repetitive facial movement overworks facial muscles, forming a groove beneath the skin’s surface. This groove eventually becomes a wrinkle.
  4. Don’t squint — get reading glasses! Sunglasses will protect skin around the eyes from sun damage — and further keep you from squinting.
  5. Eat a healthy diet, more fish, fruits and veggies.  Cold water fish, like salmon are a great source of protein — one of the building blocks of great skin — it’s also an awesome source of an essential fatty acid known as omega-3. Fatty acids help nourish skin and keep it plump and youthful.  Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidant compounds. These compounds fight damage caused by free radicals (unstable molecules that can damage cells), which in turn helps skin look younger and more radiant, and protects against some effects of photoaging.
  6. Use moisturizer. Women and men often overlook the power of a simple moisturizer. Many skin issues are due to lack of moisture.  Skin that is moist simply looks better, so lines and creases are far less noticeable.
  7. Don’t over-wash your face. According to dermatologists at the University of Maryland Medical Center, tap water can strip skin of its natural barrier oils and moisture that protect against wrinkles. Wash them off too often, and you wash away protection. Moreover, unless your soap contains moisturizers, you should use a cleanser instead. Use your fingertips to wash your face.
  8. Exfoliate-Out with the old, in with the new.  Removing dead skin cells with gentle exfoliation will accomplish three important factors.  But be careful and only use gentle exfoliation ingredients like sugar and salt.  Even washcloths may be too harsh for your face!
  • It accelerates turnover of dead skin cells.
  • It clears the way for penetration of active treatment ingredients.
  • It refines skin’s surface to look more luminous.
  1. Apply ingredients to repair and replenish skin.  Many ingredients have shown anti-ageing benefits.  Does your product provide clinical proof that it works?  It is not just the ingredient, but the application and formulation that makes the difference.
  • Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs). These natural fruit acids lift away the top layer of dead skin cells, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the eyes.
  • Retinoids (including Retin A). The only FDA-approved topical treatment for wrinkles is tretinoin, known commercially as Retin A. Retinol is a natural form of vitamin A found in many over-the-counter products. Studies show that in a stabilized formula, in high concentrations, it may be as effective as Retin A, without the side effects, such as skin burning and sensitivity.
  • Topical vitamin C. Studies at Tulane University, among others, have found it can increase collagen production, protect against damage from UVA and UVB rays, correct pigmentation problems, and improve inflammatory skin conditions. The key, however, may be the type of vitamin C used. To date, most of the research points to the L-ascorbic acid form as the most potent for wrinkle relief.
  • Peptides. Peptides can increase collagen production in sun-damaged skin and diminished lines and wrinkles.

What type of sensitive skin do I have? My skin is not dry, chapped or red all the time, but I notice occasional sensitivity.

sensitive

Q: My skin is not always dry, chapped and visibly red but I notice occasional sensitivity. What type of sensitive skin am I?

Dr. Katie Rodan: Like many people, you may have mildly sensitive skin. Possible environmental triggers of sensitivity include: cold weather, heat, wind, and sun exposure; razor burn; skincare products and in-office cosmetic procedures. Trying to determine if there is a correlation between your occasional flare-ups and one of these factors is your first step in prevention.

Itchy or tight skin? Your products or cleansers might be too drying, which can strip the skin’s natural moisture barrier and cause sensitivity. Look for moisturizers that include ceramides, lipids, cholesterol, allantoin, and dimethicone to help rejuvenate your skin’s protective barrier.

Burning or stinging? Your skin may be reacting to a specific ingredient, or you could be experiencing product overload. Give your skin a product “holiday” using only a very mild cleanser and moisturizer. This will minimize the number of products your skin is exposed to, giving it a chance to heal. If your symptoms continue, see a dermatologist who can do a patch test in order to pinpoint an ingredient you may be allergic to.

 Blushing or red-looking skin?

Visible redness may be your skin’s way of reacting to external triggers like extreme weather, sunlight, hot showers, cosmetic procedures, or razor burn. Cleanse your face with cool water and try bathing in tepid water to help reduce the appearance of sensitive skin.

When occasional sensitivity strikes, rescue your skin with SOOTHE Sensitive Skin Treatment. This multi-tasking formula with RFp3 peptide technology helps heal dry, chapped or red-looking skin. Dimethicone and allantoin fortify the skin’s barrier to relieve dryness and reduce the signs of sensitivity, while optical filters neutralize the look of redness in just 5 minutes.

If you experience dryness, cracking or visibly red skin on a regular basis, break the cycle of sensitivity with the SOOTHE Regimen. This collection of products combines clinically tested OTC active ingredients with peptides to shield against environmental aggressors associated with dry, red-looking, sensitive skin.

Start your journey to a more comfortable, healthy-looking complexion today.

Fun in the Sun

Summer is in full swing with the arrival of July 4th weekend.  Lots of activities planned with friends and family.  Outdoor picnics, boating, fishing, backyard bar-b-que, and beach combing are on the ticket for most of us.  My favorite is hanging out at the pool.

Did you know the most important skincare product is sunscreen?  So be cool and take care of your skin.  There are so many products out on the market, how do you choose the right one?  First and foremost, the best sunscreen should simply work.  According to dermatologists (and the entire American Academy of Dermatology), it needs to have an SPF of at least 30 and should be labeled both broad spectrum and water-resistant. Unfortunately, it shouldn’t be a spray or powder; there’s no way to know how much of that spray or powder floats away on the breeze. Reviews.com tested 135 products and came up with the best 2.  They narrowed down the list and  ousted any with harmful ingredients, then tested the finalists’ efficacy with a UV meter and consistent application with sun-sensitive paper. The winners not only worked well, but also smelled great and felt great on the skin.  Click the link to read the full report;  Sunscreen Review

The best overall was Alba Botanica Very Emollient Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30.  alba

The best for sensitive skin was Badger Lavender Cream SPF 30.

Get the most from your sunscreen: What you need to know

Pool side

Our modern-day “love affair” with the suntan began nearly a century ago as a status symbol of leisure, wealth and beauty. But today, with so much knowledge of the sun’s power to harm and prematurely age skin, we’re turning to safer, sunless alternatives, and embracing the ultimate answer to this beauty paradox—protection and prevention with broad spectrum sunscreen.

But did you know not all sunscreens are created equal? Understanding how they work is key. May is Melanoma Awareness Month, so now is the perfect time to boost your sunscreen smarts:

  • Use a broad spectrum sunscreen. It blocks both types of the sun’s rays: UVB (responsible for sunburns) and UVA rays (the deep, aging kind) from penetrating skin.
  • Double the SPF doesn’t equal double protection. The SPF number refers to the sunscreen’s ability to block out UVB rays only. When applied as directed, SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays and SPF 50 blocks about 99% of UVB rays.
  • Apply liberally every two hours. To achieve the full SPF benefit, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends using one ounce (a shot glassful) of sunscreen on your body and one teaspoonful (size of a quarter) on your face. If applied too thinly, an SPF 80 can act like an SPF 3.
  • Ingredients matter. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are active ingredients in mineral-based sunscreens, like SOOTHE Mineral Sunscreen, which physically block both UVB and UVA rays and are gentle enough for sensitive skin. Acknowledged by experts and the FDA, chemical blockers (like avobenzone) absorb well into skin and offer excellent protection against UVA rays.
  • Check the expiration date. Fresh ingredients make sunscreen more effective. Keep your bottle in the shade and avoid leaving it in a hot car, as excessive heat can break down the active ingredients.
  • Apply rain or shine. While UVB rays are at their peak midday, UVA rays are present from sunrise to sunset and can penetrate your skin even on cloudy days—who knew? We recommend applying broad spectrum sunscreen every morning, 15-30 minutes before heading outside.

Get to know your ideal sunscreen and combine it with other sun protection measures to stay ahead of melanoma. Wear a broad-brimmed hat and protective clothing when you step out of the shade. Even better, stay out of the sun altogether and use ESSENTIALS Foaming Sunless Tan for a healthy, natural-looking glow—and show off your sun savvy.
