Fact vs. fiction: Fair-skinned people always have sensitive skin

fair

FICTION. While all ethnicities are more or less equally prone to sensitive skin, having light-toned skin does not mean that you are destined to suffer from sensitivity. As Dr. Katie Rodan notes, “Despite all the studies, the medical and scientific communities’ ability to predict who will be sensitive to what is still not very good.” While genetics do play a role, there are many other external factors that can trigger sensitive skin.

Skin tone, or color, is actually linked to how our skin reacts to the environment and how it shows signs of aging. Fair skin is at a higher risk for melanoma (the deadliest skin cancer), yet all skin tones and types need protection from the sun to look good and stay healthy.

Your skin and its sensitivity are unique to you—based on a combination of factors, like age, hormones, climate, and skin hydration and more. Common scenarios related to sensitive skin include:

  • Cosmetic Intolerance. Many people who suddenly exhibit dry, chapped, cracked or red-looking skin without any prior history of sensitive skin are really experiencing intolerance to cosmetic products, even ones they have used for some time. It can come on suddenly; your skin can no longer take the products you’re using, so it reacts by flaring up.
  • Stress. Let’s face it…the many forms of stress that we deal with every day can wreak havoc on the skin’s protective barrier function, making skin more likely to show the signs of dryness and damage. When skin is stressed, it literally loses water at a greater rate, jeopardizing its natural ability to repair and renew itself, which perpetuates a cycle of sensitivity.
  • Environmental changes. Traveling from a warm, moist region to a dry climate with cold temperatures, low humidity and wind results in skin that’s likely to become sensitive. Anytime the barrier function is weakened, the skin leaks moisture and its natural defenses are compromised, allowing irritants to enter. Travel tip: SOOTHE Sensitive Skin Treatment is a multi-tasking formula that reduces visible redness in 5 minutes and fortifies the skin’s barrier to relieve dryness—so you can rescue your skin on-the-go.

No matter what the cause of sensitivity, you can take daily steps to help your skin find its equilibrium. Avoid harsh or chemical exfoliants, rentinoids, alcohol, fragrances and chemical sunscreens. Look for gentler ingredients like dimethicone, allentoin, oatmeal, chamomile, lipids, vitamins C and E and green tea, to name a few. SOOTHE Regimen shields against the biological and environmental aggressors associated with dry, chapped, cracked, sensitive skin to help restore a healthy-looking, even-toned complexion—no matter what your skin tone.

Which acids can work wonders for your skin?

24

When you hear the words skin and acid together, it may call to mind intense peeling or red-looking skin, but there’s a brighter side to this skincare story. Some acids are touted in the dermatology world for their hydrating, lightening and rejuvenating effects on skin—leaving a dull, complexion visibly transformed. Other acids are the first line of defense against acne and signs of aging.

Learning the ins and outs of acids can help you find the right products for your specific skin type or condition. Check out our list of common skin concerns and skin-friendly solutions with potent acid ingredients:

  • Age spots, brown spots or discoloration got you down? Changes in skin pigmentation are common in the course of a lifetime, yet they often affect how our age is perceived by others. Whether the unwanted marks are due to sun damage, hormonal changes (resulting in melasma), or other forms of hyperpigmentation, several acids come to the skin’s rescue in the REVERSE Regimen. Alpha hydroxy acids loosen dead skin cells, kojic acid and antioxidants visibly brighten, and salicylic acid exfoliates and refines skin for a more radiant complexion.
  • Agonizing over acne and post acne marks? Exfoliating ingredients like alpha hydroxy acid and salicylic acid help renew the skin by shedding surface cells that contain abnormal or uneven pigmentation. This allows lightening agents or other active ingredients to more easily penetrate the skin. Try  UNBLEMISH Regimen to break the acne cycle—and diminish the visible signs it leaves behind on your skin.

Bottom line: Before using new acid-based skincare, always do a spot test to see how your skin reacts. Ease the products into your routine by using every few days at first, then build up to daily applications. Boosting your skincare smarts can lead you to the products most likely to deliver the best result of all: radiant, healthy-looking skin.

The future of your skin is up to you

A video of a Photoshopped 100-year-old woman went viral after this extreme “virtual makeover” illustrated the dramatic results of what if the woman were 70 years younger and wrinkle-free. The video, first posted in 2003 after a “Photoshop Surgeon” reverse-aged the woman using digital technology, trended again recently with over 6.5 million views and counting .

What will your face look like 20, 30, 40 years from now? Sun damage from early in life can show up years later as wrinkles, brown spots, unevenness and sagging skin. Stress, too, often manifests in the form of expression lines around your eyes and between the brows. Even heredity can play a role.

While no product can eliminate wrinkles as dramatically as the Photoshop experiment, you can take steps today to help stave off the signs of aging tomorrow.

Stress Less. By making small, incremental lifestyle changes, you can help mitigate your stress levels. Practice yoga 15 minutes a day. Take a walk after lunch. Get monthly massages. And when stressful instances occur, remember to b-r-e-a-t-h-e.

Wear Sunscreen Daily. UV exposure from the sun is responsible for 80% of your skin’s signs of aging. Fortunately, by applying a sunscreen like REDEFINE Triple Defense Treatment every day, you can help protect your skin against these harmful aging effects that often appear later in life.

Fill Expression Lines. Expression lines form over time as we smile, squint, frown or furrow our brows.  ACUTE CARE™ Skincare for Expression Lines can help by filling expression lines with proprietary Liquid Cone Technology that melts line-defying peptides and hyaluronic acid directly into the wrinkle for smoother-looking skin.

You might not be able to wipe 20, 30 or 40 years worth of aging from your face with a click of a keyboard, but you can help create a more youthful-looking future with some lifestyle changes and a few choice skincare products.

Get the most from your sunscreen: What you need to know

Pool side

Our modern-day “love affair” with the suntan began nearly a century ago as a status symbol of leisure, wealth and beauty. But today, with so much knowledge of the sun’s power to harm and prematurely age skin, we’re turning to safer, sunless alternatives, and embracing the ultimate answer to this beauty paradox—protection and prevention with broad spectrum sunscreen.

But did you know not all sunscreens are created equal? Understanding how they work is key. May is Melanoma Awareness Month, so now is the perfect time to boost your sunscreen smarts:

  • Use a broad spectrum sunscreen. It blocks both types of the sun’s rays: UVB (responsible for sunburns) and UVA rays (the deep, aging kind) from penetrating skin.
  • Double the SPF doesn’t equal double protection. The SPF number refers to the sunscreen’s ability to block out UVB rays only. When applied as directed, SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays and SPF 50 blocks about 99% of UVB rays.
  • Apply liberally every two hours. To achieve the full SPF benefit, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends using one ounce (a shot glassful) of sunscreen on your body and one teaspoonful (size of a quarter) on your face. If applied too thinly, an SPF 80 can act like an SPF 3.
  • Ingredients matter. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are active ingredients in mineral-based sunscreens, like SOOTHE Mineral Sunscreen, which physically block both UVB and UVA rays and are gentle enough for sensitive skin. Acknowledged by experts and the FDA, chemical blockers (like avobenzone) absorb well into skin and offer excellent protection against UVA rays.
  • Check the expiration date. Fresh ingredients make sunscreen more effective. Keep your bottle in the shade and avoid leaving it in a hot car, as excessive heat can break down the active ingredients.
  • Apply rain or shine. While UVB rays are at their peak midday, UVA rays are present from sunrise to sunset and can penetrate your skin even on cloudy days—who knew? We recommend applying broad spectrum sunscreen every morning, 15-30 minutes before heading outside.

Get to know your ideal sunscreen and combine it with other sun protection measures to stay ahead of melanoma. Wear a broad-brimmed hat and protective clothing when you step out of the shade. Even better, stay out of the sun altogether and use ESSENTIALS Foaming Sunless Tan for a healthy, natural-looking glow—and show off your sun savvy.

Have scientists discovered the key to reversing aging?

geneWomen check themselves out in the mirror anywhere from 8 to 16 times a day on average, according to a report in London’s Daily Mail. We hope it’s because they like what they see. But how much time do you spend scrutinizing your reflection for signs of aging? You’re not alone if you wish you could turn back the clock.

It may sound like a futuristic dream, but researchers at the University of Tsukuba in Japan  have found that the regulation of two genes, linked to the production of glycine (an amino acid), is partially responsible for aging. If their compelling theory holds true, this could lead to glycine supplements to delay or reverse the process of aging—though it could still be years before this scientific fountain of youth ever becomes mainstream.

For now, you can get real results from dermatological-based skincare in the comfort of your home. REDEFINE ACUTE CARE™ is an absolute game-changer, clinically proven to melt line-defying hyaluronic acid and potent peptides into wrinkles for visibly reduced expressions lines. Before bed, apply REDEFINE Night Renewing Serum and REDEFINE Lip Renewing Serum to make the most of your beauty sleep.

And remember that a little diligence can go a long way toward keeping skin youthful looking: avoid the sun, wear broad spectrum sunscreen rain or shine, and sleep on your back to avoid creasing. When you take a consistent, daily approach to nourishing and protecting your skin, you’re bound to like what you see the next time you look in the mirror.

FACT vs FICTION? YOUR SKIN GETS USED TO INGREDIENTS SO YOU SHOULD SWITCH PRODUCTS PERIODICALLY

wash face

FICTION. Many variables can affect the daily results you experience from using your skincare Regimen, but your skin alone will not become immune over time to the clinical benefits of the products. Product efficacy depends on a variety of things, such as the active ingredients in a formula and your skin’s changing needs. Therefore, there’s no need to change your Regimen unless you develop new skin concerns.

Overall, most skincare products will take up to 12 weeks to deliver their maximum corrective results, so be patient. Certain skincare ingredients, like antioxidants, emollients and sunscreen, are well-tolerated by skin and will remain just as effective over time. However, you may opt to gradually increase concentrations of skin-sensitive retinoids, glycolic acid and niacin, once your skin can better tolerate them. To help boost motivation and track your results, take a “before” photo when you start a new Regimen and then take weekly “after” shots so you can see evidence of your skin’s transformation.

If a product seems less effective, consider whether changes in age, lifestyle or climate may be affecting your skin. Try taking a break from your Regimen for a few weeks to see how your skin responds. Because skin is hydrated primarily from the outside, evaluate your environment and adapt your skincare products accordingly.

Although you might not see the same rapid progress you enjoyed in the first weeks, it doesn’t mean the products have stopped working. Your skin may have reached its maximum benefit and be in “maintenance mode” while the products quietly sustain those initial benefits at a more optimal level.

Ultimately, don’t switch from a Regimen that has worked well for your skin. Remember, compliance with a skincare Regimen is key to achieving great results.

HOW MANY TIMES CAN I REPEAT THE FULL REDEFINE REGIMEN IN ONE DAY?

Ask the Doctor via DermRF

wash too much

Dr. Kathy Fields: Overwashing your face can disrupt the skin’s delicate moisture barrier, leading to dryness and irritation. Skin may even produce more oil in an attempt to make up for lost moisture, creating a cycle of oil production and additional skin concerns. Ironically, water can also be very drying because it draws moisture out of the skin. Always rinse with lukewarm (not hot) water to help avoid stripping your skin of its natural moisturizing factors.

Using your Regimen twice a day is recommended—ideally, once in the morning and once before bedtime to ensure that the products are on your skin for at least six to eight hours. If you work out in the morning, use your Regimen afterwards. If you work out in the afternoon, use REDEFINE Eye Cloths to refresh the skin instead of cleansing again. In the evening, apply your REDEFINE Regimen for the second time daily, as directed.
